Intensive Japanese Language Program "Bekka"

The “Bekka” program offers Japanese language instruction to international students who are planning to study at a Japanese university either at the undergraduate or graduate level, and offers classes to deepen their understanding of Japanese culture.

Characteristics

  • Japanese language courses are divided into eight levels: elementary level, upper-elementary level, pre-intermediate level, intermediate level, upper-intermediate level, pre-advanced level, advanced level, and high-advanced level. The Bekka program offers intensive Japanese language courses mainly in the mornings, Monday through Friday.
  • In the afternoon, the Bekka program offers various lecture courses on Japanese culture and society, conducted primarily in Japanese and English, as well as Japanese and English Language Seminars.
  • Through classes and extracurricular activities, the Bekka program offers various opportunities to study traditional Japanese culture, such as flower arrangement, the tea ceremony, Noh Play, craftworks, shrine festivals, etc.
  • Students of the Bekka program are eligible to apply for “admission by recommendation” to the undergraduate and graduate programs of Doshisha University (Faculties of Letters, Social Studies, Economics, Commerce, Policy Studies, Psychology, Science, Culture and Information Science, Science and Engineering, Life and Medical Sciences, Health and Sports Science and Graduate School of American Studies, Graduate School of Policy and Management, and Graduate School of Business) for 2009.

    Curriculum Outline

Period of Study, Entrance Schedule, and Student Enrollment

The period of the program is one year. Students can start the program in the spring semester (April-September) or fall semester (September-March). The number of students to be admitted is 130. (65 students each semester).

Time for Application

Spring (April) Entry: Friday, September 26 to Friday, October 10, 2008
Fall (September) Entry: Friday, April 17 to Friday, May 8, 2009

If you wish to apply, please request the “Admisssions Guide for the Intensive Japanese Language Program Bekka” and use the included original application form. (The sample form from the homepage can not be accepted)

Admission Fee 50,000 yen
Annual Tuition 459,000 yen
Total 509,000 yen

Scholarships

  • Doshisha University Scholarship for International Students (for students in the Bekka program)
    This scholarship is for students enrolled in the Bekka program. The scholarship grants the full amount of tuition for the second semester (actual amount for those who enroll in April or September in the 2008 academic year: 229,500 yen) for up to ten students each semester, and up to twenty students each year from 2009.
  • Honors Scholarship for Privately-Financed International Students
    This scholarship grants 48,000 yen per month for one year. Four students were awarded this scholarship for the 2008 academic year (one for six months).
