CJLC Program for Exchange Students("Nichibun" Program) : Overview

This program is specifically for Exchange Students from foreign institutions that have a student exchange agreement with Doshisha University. The purpose of the Nichibun program at the Center for Japanese Language and Culture is to develop the Japanese language skills of the international Exchange Students and to deepen their understanding of Japanese culture.

Every semester, the Nichibun program offers intensive Japanese language courses mainly in the morning, Monday through Friday. These courses are divided into eight different levels (elementary level, upper-elementary level, pre-intermediate level, intermediate level, upper-intermediate level, pre-advanced level, advanced level, and high-advanced level) and students are placed according to their ability.

In the afternoon, the Nichibun program offers various lecture courses in Japanese Studies and International Studies (conducted mainly in Japanese or English) and Japanese and English Language Seminars. Through the classes and extracurricular activities, the Nichibun program also offers various opportunities to study and experience traditional Japanese culture, such as flower arrangement, the tea ceremony, Noh play, craftworks, shrine festivals, etc. by making good use of its location in Kyoto. Furthermore, students can take classes covering modern and global fields, such as Contemporary Arts, International Business, Media, and the History of the World in order to broaden their intercultural understanding.

Students who show a good command of the Japanese language through the placement test will be allowed additionally to take courses at Doshisha’s undergraduate programs, taking classes together with regular Japanese students (some restrictions apply).

Students of the Nichibun program will be also offered the chance to take courses offered by other universities in Kyoto who are members of the Kyoto Consortium.

International Exchange Students are free to use the same facilities as regular Doshisha students, which include, among other things, computer labs, libraries and gyms.
