Graduate School of Engineering : Information and Computer Science

Master’s Program

  1. Objective of Education and Research
The objective of the master’s program is to provide education that will enable the acquisition of broad, high level knowledge about information processing and transmission necessary to develop the information systems that will form the basis of 21st century society. Such information systems also need to be environmentally friendly and to have intelligent processing capabilities. To this end, we aim to provide students with balanced knowledge regarding the information field, which involves computer science and the processing and transmission of information, and the intelligence field, within which human intellectual activity is replicated, or embodied in engineering applications. Specifically, lecture subjects are available in both fields, and are designed to enable students to acquire broad knowledge of primarily theoretical aspects through the completion of studies in both fields. At the same time, research fosters the fundamental abilities necessary to become engineers and researchers who are counted among the top world echelons, through submission of a master’s thesis on experiments undertaken in laboratory research, and through as much experience as possible in presenting to and engaging in debate at symposia.

  2. Goals for Human Resource Development
The objective is to develop individuals able to exercise the following abilities:
    1. The ability to take a lead role in resolving expert technical issues in the domains and fields of information systems development.
    2. Development of information processing engineers who have balanced communication abilities as members of society, and are capable of leading the planning and formulation of new information systems in association with others.
    3. Development of information processing engineers who are not limited by the technical fields addressed in conventional information engineering, who understand, analyze and identify issues from an awareness of the significance of information processing and transmission necessary for the society of the future, and who are able to direct resolution of those issues.
    4. Development of information processing engineers with the essential abilities to become engineers and researchers who are counted among the top world echelons.

Doctoral Program

  1. Objective of Education and Research
The doctoral program is the same as the master’s program in that its objective is to enable the acquisition of sophisticated and broad knowledge about information processing and transmission necessary to develop the information systems that will form the basis of 21st century society. The doctoral program, however, goes a step further than the master’s program by aiming to develop a high level of research ability sufficient to function as a researcher. Specifically, the Program facilitates the development of deep knowledge and creativity in students’ individual fields through research towards degree thesis and presentations and debates at symposia, as well as mastery of a broad range of insights and capabilities through seminar subjects designed to develop the ability to understand the nature of research in other fields. To adapt to the era of globalization students are also guided to actively create opportunities to present at international academic conferences, in order to develop their ability to send and receive information in languages other than Japanese.

  2. Goals for Human Resource Development
The objective is to develop individuals able to exercise the following abilities:
    1. Sophisticated research capabilities relating to the processing of information and its transmission, with the intent of writing doctoral theses and presenting at international academic conferences.
    2. Ability to take a lead role in resolving expert technical issues in the domains and fields of information systems development.
    3. Ability to lead the development and execution of research while paying attention to the broad range of associated fields without becoming trapped by one’s own particular field of specialty.
    4. Foreign language ability sufficient for one’s own research and studies, and adequate to return the fruits of research to society.
    5. Fundamental ability to formulate and execute research plans necessary to drive R&D as a future leader of an R&D group.
