Graduate School of Life and Medical Sciences

The Graduate School of Life and Medical Sciences aims to create new technologies based on the integrated fields of engineering and medicine.

Outline

The Graduate School of Life and Medical Sciences: Our New Challenge

In this aging society with a declining birth rate, we need to realize rapid solutions for various problems, such as improvement in health and quality of life as well as reduction in the economic burden stemming from the cost of social insurance, medicine and healthcare. For this purpose, individuals are requested to obtain high and wide points of view and technology to handle problems with a broader perspective and the right scientific knowledge. The Graduate School of Life and Medical Sciences has been established to offer an educational system based on the idea of strong cooperation between engineering and medical sciences. It is expected to develop the new aspects of research and study areas, taking in the up-to-date results of the life sciences.

The Faculty of Life and Medical Sciences and the Graduate School of Life and Medical Sciences have been established in response to such social demands. One of their great purpose is to train and produce graduates who can properly understand the deep essence of life’s phenomena and invent applications with the integrated perspectives of both medicine and engineering. Students in this faculty and school are expected to attain an extensive knowledge of various scientific areas, from medicine to chemistry and physics, focusing on the importance of experimental facts. Of course, all of these areas are strongly related to the life and medical sciences.

The Concepts and Features of the Curriculum

The educational program’s target is to produce graduates who can take broad and active approaches towards various research problems, with wide frames of viewpoints encompassing the life sciences, engineering and technology, as well as the social sciences.

Medical Engineering Course
The purpose of this course is to produce leading-edge engineering graduates, who can create new technologies by applying the innovative ideas of the superior actual biological functions of humans and other living substances. The integration of medical perspective with mechanical, information and electronic engineering points of view offers a new education for the self-independent as well as creative engineers and researchers.

Medical Life Systems Course
The phenomena of life are studied in this course, which regards human beings as one unique system of life. The main topic of research projects is the clarification of various epidemiological mechanisms arising from imbalances in systemic control systems and the prevention and treatment of such problems.

Excellent Facilities and Equipment

The large Kyotanabe Campus, which has a total area of 790,000 square meters, houses the Graduate School of Engineering and the Graduate School of Culture and Information Science. These schools closely collaborate through education and research. The Ishinkan building, built for the Graduate School of Life and Medical Sciences, rises six stories above the ground and has one story underground, and contains world-class laboratory and research equipment.

In 2006, the Gakkentoshi Campus in the Kansai Science City was established as a new base for research at Doshisha University. The Kaifu-kan building there is located next to the hospital of a medical corporation, with which Doshisha has a framework agreement.
