We educate generalists with advanced specialist knowledge.
Outline
About the Graduate School of Policy and Management
The Graduate School of Policy and Management opened its door in April 1995. It is an entirely new form of graduate school in that its mission is to produce human resources with advanced specialist knowledge in a broad range of disciplines. Expertise acquired in the School enables students to seek solutions to the increasingly diverse and complex problems that have confronted modern society .
For the master's program, we have developed a strong research and education system with the goal of cultivating the specialist skills demanded by society. With the doctoral program, we strive to produce citizens who have mastered specialist knowledge and skills and acquired the capacity to systematically put those strengths to work. It is another important goal of the Graduate School of Policy and Management to provide individuals with years of real-world career experience in the public or private sector with opportunities to study and develop theories based on their experience.
To achieve these objectives, the school has established five course tracks in its General Policy Science Course. This enables students to select a track that matches with issues related to their interests . In the 2009 academic year, we introduced the Technology and Innovative Management Course(integrated doctoral program).
Diversified Fields of Study
General Policy Science Course
Public Policy Course
Students in this course acquire knowledge and theory in fields such as political science, economics, law, and international relations. We have organized a curriculum that enables students to identify social realities and problems and to acquire the comprehensive policymaking skills required to plan and implement public policies for the solution of those problems. The curriculum is suited for those who desire active careers in national or local government. |
Corporate Policy Course
The curriculum for this program enables students to pursue a systematic study of theories in corporate administration, corporate management, and business economics . It is well suited for those who, having acquired real-world skills for active participation in corporate business planning, pursue corporate careers and those who plan careers in management consulting and other fields that demand specialized and refined expertise.
International Policy Course
Society has witnessed an accelerating trend toward globalization and internationalization since the start of the 21st century. Within the international economic sphere, we have witnessed progress in the development of mutually complementary relationships together with a steady increase in political and social problems demanding international coordination. Accordingly, this course strives to produce specialists (e.g., for international civil service, international business, and NGO positions) who have the skills to handle international issues affecting the public sector, companies, and society at large inside Japan as well as organizations active at the international level.
Human Security Research Course
This is a research-oriented course that focuses on assorted problems in human security now gaining worldwide attention as urgent issues demanding action by human society in the 21st century. It integrates the anthropological, sociological, scientific, and technical approaches to these issues and strives for advanced education and research based on an interdisciplinary approach.
Social Innovation Research Course
This course assumes a traditional yet flexible, hands-on approach to curriculum organization and requires that students prepare their dissertation papers based on the outcomes of field surveys and courses of action they have proposed and implemented themselves. This approach reintroduces the tradition of having students cultivate independent survey, research, and planning skills and engage in career planning that details the future occupations or activities they seek.
Technology and Innovative Management Course [Integrated Doctoral Program]
This course assembles the wisdom of the humanities and sciences to create a forum for the systematic study of policies and strategies aimed at harnessing science and technology for "improvements to the well-being of the individual and society." To that end, enrolled students engage in a study of the logic underlying modern science and technology as well as policy and strategy science. As a foundation for the pursuit of this coursework, steps are taken to reinforce the collaborative relationships of three different actors on the social stage: industry, government, and academia. This course is distinguished for the uniqueness of its educational objectives, content, and resources.
