Double Degree Programs
Academic Exchange and Double Degree System Between Doshisha University Graduate School of Engineering and Écoles Centrales
In 1988, Doshisha University Graduate School of Engineering became the first graduate school in Japan to conclude a student exchange agreement with École Centrale de Lille, one of France’s Grandes Écoles. Since then, a total of fifteen students from Doshisha and École Centrale de Lille have conducted joint research in laboratories in Japan and France and received double degrees, earning both a master’s degree from Doshisha University Graduate School of Engineering and a Mastère Spécialisé from École Centrale de Lille.
In order to promote deeper and broader exchange, the Graduate School of Engineering is collaborating with the French side in the planning of new exchange programs. These new exchange programs are expected to extend the range of academic years that students are eligible to participate in, and permit students to earn not only a Mastère Spécialisé but also a doctoral degree and a Diplôme d'Ingénieur, which is a passport for international engineers.
Furthermore, the Graduate School of Engineering has concluded similar agreements with three other Grandes Écoles. These three institutions are affiliated with the Écoles Centrales, as is École Centrale de Lille.
Écoles Centrales

The Grandes Écoles of France, including institutions of the Groupe des Écoles Centrales, are institutions of higher education, though different from universities. Admission to a Grandes École requires students who have passed the Baccalaurate, which is the final secondary teaching examination, to pass a nationwide entrance examination after taking two years of university preparatory studies. Specifically, the engineering schools of the Groupe des Écoles Centrales aim to nurture general experts in technical fields by providing an education that focuses on the study of a broad range of basic sciences and applied engineering technologies, and internships at companies.
Programs for Simultaneously Acquiring Master’s Degrees
- Courses for Simultaneously Acquiring a Diplôme d'Ingénieur and a Master’s Degree from Doshisha University
The Diplôme d'Ingénieur is a special international degree in engineering that can be acquired only at a Grande École. Earning this state qualification requires the completion of studies of regular subjects in the first and second years at a Grande École. Doshisha’s Faculty of Engineering and Graduate School of Engineering are now planning to establish a program designed to enable students who have studied in France for two years during their third and fourth years and have satisfied the requirements for acquiring the state qualifications of France, to simultaneously acquire a master’s degree from Doshisha University and a Diplôme d'Ingénieur upon completing the course of study in the master’s program at Doshisha’s Graduate School of Engineering.
- Courses for Simultaneously Acquiring a Mastère Spécialisé and a Master’s Degree from Doshisha University
This program enables students who are working towards a master’s degree at the Doshisha University Graduate School of Engineering to study in France for one year, conduct joint research, and write their master’s thesis. Students who have completed this program can simultaneously acquire a master’s degree from Doshisha University and a Mastère Spécialisé, which is equivalent to a master’s degree. So far, a total of fifteen Japanese and French students have been awarded double degrees in this program.
Program for Simultaneously Acquiring a Doctoral Degree
This program enables students who are studying in the doctoral program at the Doshisha University Graduate School of Engineering to study at a school in the Groupe des Écoles Centrales that conducts research related to their research, and simultaneously acquire a doctoral degree in engineering from Doshisha University and a Ph.D from France after submitting their doctoral thesis.
