Types of International Students

International students at Doshisha University are classified as full-time, degree-seeking students (Regular Students); full-time, non-degree students (Special Students); students of the Intensive Japanese Language Program “Bekka”, students of the Nichibun program (Exchange Students); or visiting graduate students.

Full-Time, Degree-Seeking Students (Regular Students)

Regular Students are those who expect to complete the designated undergraduate or graduate curricula of the university. The standard period of study for obtaining a degree is four years for undergraduate (bachelor’s degree) programs, two years for master’s degree programs, and three years for doctoral degree programs. Such standard period of study does not apply to those pursuing a double-degree program and those enrolled at one of the two professional graduate programs.

Full-Time, Non-Degree Students (Special Students)

Special Students are those who either audit or enroll to fulfill requirements for particular courses in undergraduate or master’s programs, or those who seek a professor for directed research in a doctoral program. Special Students who wish to become Regular Students must get the approval of their individual department.

Students in the Nichibun Program (Exchange Students)

Exchange Students are those who come from partner universities to study Japanese language and culture in Doshisha University’s Nichibun program.

Students in the Intensive Japanese Language Program “Bekka”

Bekka students are those who come to study Japanese language and culture in Doshisha University’s Bekka program.

Visiting Graduate Students

Visiting graduate students are foreign students who are enrolled in graduate schools outside of Japan and who come to Doshisha University for a period of one to six months with the purpose of carrying out research. They cannot enroll in courses at Doshisha University and do not receive credits for their time at Doshisha University.
