‘A wedding at Clarke Chapel’
Message from Director of the Center for Christian Culture

Clarke Chapel
In spring 2008, The Clarke Memorial Hall was restored to its original appearance so that today it stands as it did when it was first built in 1892. Eager to share the joy of this beautiful structure, Doshisha started to offer chapel weddings at Clarke Chapel to Doshisha-related people.
The founder of Doshisha, Joseph Hardy Neesima, embraced the Christian beliefs of the Protestant Congregational Church in the New England region of North America. After he returned to Japan, he spent his life engaged in education at Doshisha, alongside missionary activities. He had a strong desire to provide education that respects and values individuality, and nurture ‘exuberant youth who cherish living by their conscience’. He was particularly fond of a phrase found in the Bible: ‘it is more blessed to give than to receive’. Neesima believed this phrase held true in the case of marriage, as a union such as this can only prosper when both spouses help and support each other. With this Christian spirit of Neesima in mind, the staff of the Clarke Chapel are pleased to help the bride and groom begin their new life together. We hope that, through the wedding ceremony at Clarke Chapel, and the preparation days prior to the wedding when Christian viewpoints about marriage and the wedding are introduced by the preacher, future couples will remember the wedding ceremony as a truly wonderful milestone in their life.
