Rochester Institute of Technology Kyoto Language & Culture Immersion Program in Kyotanabe campus

Updated Jun. 28, 2019
We had 10 students from Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) from May 27th to June 21st on their Language and Culture Immersion program at Kyotanabe Campus. RIT is a private university located in Rochester, New York, USA.

Their college majors in RIT are diverse, like IT, Art, Medical Science and so on. But all of them are interested in, and actually have been studying, Japanese culture and language. This program aims to make their understanding deeper and wider with hand-on experience in Japan.

Besides classroom lectures in Kyotanabe campus, they explored some historical and cultural sites on a field trip to Kyoto, Nara and Takamatsu. They also tried Sado(tea ceremony) and Kado(flower arrangement), which made them expand an understanding of Japanese culture.

One of the highlights of this program was a home-stay week. 10 local families warmly welcomed students to their house and enjoyed doing many things together, like cocking, chatting, visiting another family member’s house, visiting their kid’s school etc. These precious experiences must be the best memory for students.

10 Doshisha Students from various faculties joined this program as “Language Partners”. Chatting with their partner made students from both schools more motivated for language learning. We believe that these interactions between RIT and Doshisha students must have positive effect on their cross-cultural understanding.

On June 21st, we held a farewell party at the ShionKan Lounge, where they enjoyed talking with their host family and Doshisha peers even after the party closed. As they seemed to love Japan even more, we heard comments such as “I would like to go to the graduate school in Japan” or “I promise to come back to see my host family and friends again”.

We hope these warm relationships among all participants will last long!
