From July 6th to 17th, Northeastern University Summer Program, one of Dialogue of Civilization programs, was held at Imadegawa Campus. We welcomed 13 students from Northeastern University (NEU), Boston, and they studied History of Kyoto, Japanese Buddhist Art and Religion using Doshsiha facilities.
During the program, we invited a special visiting lecturer and gave lectures about Calligraphy, Flower Arrangement and Tea Ceremony on campus which were first-time experiences for most of the participants, and they experienced Zen meditation off-campus too. NEU students attentively listened to lecturer’s explanation showing their positive attitude to learn Japanese tradition and culture.
Doshisha students were also involved in the program as “supporters”. They joined Japanese language classes as conversation partners, strolled Gion area with the participants and for the first trial of NEU’s program, they went to see Gion Festival’s Yamahoko-Junko together. NEU students mainly spoke Japanese which they have been studying at NEU at least one year. They seemed to enjoy the language and cultural exchange each other.
It was only 12 days they stayed at Doshisha University, we hope they will spend rest of their program in Japan energetically and develop their Japanese ability more even after going back to their country.
