2018 The University of Arizona Summer Program – Imadegawa Campus

Updated Aug. 21, 2018
For 4 weeks from June 11th to July 6th, we welcomed 9 students from the University of Arizona, the United States on their summer program at Imadegawa Campus. They studied Japanese Language, Japanese Food Culture and Japanese Anime and Visual Culture using Doshisha facilities.

In addition to the classes given by instructors, students visited many major tourist sites in Kyoto as off-campus activities. They went shrines and temples, Nishiki Market, Arashiyama, and moreover they experienced a tea ceremony, watched a professional baseball game at Koshien Stadium and stayed overnight at a capsule hotel in Osaka. Thanks to the cooperation of Doshisha Calligraphy Club and Kendo Club, they tried calligraphy writing and practiced Kendo in the Kendo costume. All those experiences made them understand Japanese culture deeper from various viewpoints.

Doshisha students assisted the participants to learn Japanese and also served as “buddies” who support them on and off campus. Even during 4 weeks, they interacted each other well and seemed to build great friendship.
Even though a big earthquake occurred in the 2nd week and it rained intensively on the last day of the program, we heard many comments that shows how participants enjoyed and were satisfied with this program and also their stay in Kyoto.

We hope them to grow and deepen their interest to Japanese culture more and study harder after this program.
