2020 Autumn Semester Classes

Classes for 2020 Autumn Semester begin on Thursday, September 24, in line with the academic calendar. From the perspective of preventing the spread of COVID-19, however, the classes will be provided in the following two types: in-person learning (for which students are expected to keep at least 1 m distance in principle from each other on all sides when seated in the classroom); and online, which was adopted in the spring semester as well.
Course registration will also be conducted as scheduled. Please regularly check the websites of the university and your faculty/graduate school, etc., and Announcements from the University on the Doshisha University Electronic Tutorial System (DUET) in order not to miss any of the necessary notices.

1.Class Type for Each Course (In-person Learning/online)

We have been informing you of whether each course will be provided in-person or via online since Monday, September 7 through an Announcement from the University on DUET.
Please note that depending on the registration situation during the course registration change period, in-person classes might be switched to online. In this case, the faculty member in charge of the registered course or other staff will contact you through the message function of DUET, so please check any messages that you receive.

2.Change in Syllabuses

The syllabuses of some courses might be revised due to changes in the class types. For courses for which you have registered for the autumn semester and plan to register during the autumn course registration change period, please be sure to check their syllabuses on or after Friday, September 11.
In addition, after the number of registrants for each course has been determined, the class types for some courses might be changed mainly due to classroom capacities, and such change in class types might require the syllabuses of the course to be revised. If the revision makes you want to withdraw your application for the courses, please complete the application withdrawal procedure within the relevant period designated above. However, please note that even if you withdraw your application for the courses, you cannot register for additional courses.
Please also note in advance that depending on the future situation of COVID-19, the class types and syllabuses might be changed even after the application withdrawal period.

3.Cancelation of Provision of Courses Registered in the Autumn Semester

If a course requires classes to be provided in a certain format (e.g. fieldwork, experiments/practical training, PBL, etc.), provision of the course may be canceled because the failure to achieve the Goals/Aims initially set in its syllabus may prevent a strict performance evaluation and credit recognition.
If the provision of such course is canceled, the students registered for the course will be contacted via the email address given to them by the university and the message function of DUET and given further instructions. It is possible to register for additional courses other than those whose provision has been canceled. However, the period for accepting additional registration will vary depending on the timing of the cancelation, so please complete the necessary procedure in compliance with instructions.

4.Standards for the Use of Classrooms

Based on the Doshisha University Guidelines for Preventing the Spread of Infection of the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) (revised version), posted on the university’s website, we developed the Standards for the Use of Classrooms - Division of Academic Affairs.
When attending classes in classrooms, please cooperate and help prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the classrooms in accordance with these standards and the instructions of the faculty members in charge.

5.Use of Computer Classrooms

We will enable computer classrooms to be used in the autumn semester without reducing their regular seating capacities by installing partitions to prevent the spread of droplets and by requiring all users of computer classrooms to wear a mask.

6.Sales of Textbooks

Textbooks were scheduled to be sold on the university’s campuses in the autumn semester, but you will be able to use home delivery service too, as in the spring semester. For more information, please see the Doshisha Co-op website (external website)*(Japanese Only).

7.Reasonable Accommodation for Ensuring Sufficient Learning and Taking an Examination

In compliance with the university’s guidelines, students displaying certain symptoms, such as a fever, will be ordered to suspend their attendance at classes on the university’s campuses based on their report to the university. In addition, reasonable accommodation for ensuring sufficient learning and taking an examination will be provided for students with an underlying health condition or other factor associated with a higher risk of developing severe COVID-19 if infected, and such students will not be forced to attend classes on the university’s campuses.
If you cannot attend in-person classes due to either of the reasons above, please contact the office of your affiliated faculty/graduate school.

8.Wi-Fi Study Rooms for Students

In the autumn semester, we will set up study rooms where Wi-Fi is available so that students can make effective use of their spare time by taking online classes on the university’s campuses. (For this purpose, we will use existing classrooms.)
Since each study room has only a limited number of seats, you may not be able to use them.
For the classrooms to be used as study rooms, we have been informing you since September 10 through DUET.

9.Announcements from the University

The university will make announcements basically through Announcements from the University on DUET or the university’s website, as was done in the spring semester.
The university has some matters to be announced regarding classes to be provided in the autumn semester. Please log in to DUET and check the university’s website frequently.

Please note that depending on the future COVID-19 situation, all classes might be provided through e-learning after the start of the autumn semester.

For classes provided by the Law School and the Graduate School of Business, separate notices will be released by the Law School Office and the Office of Graduate School of Business, respectively.
