To students admitted in the 2020 academic year (new second-year students)

More than one year has passed since the first detection of COVID-19 that threw the world into turmoil. It must have been a tough, challenging year for you who entered Doshisha University in 2020, as you faced unusual circumstances such as campus closure and having to take all classes online as soon as you began your life as a university student. I express my deep respect for your efforts in continuing studies despite the difficulties.

In April last year, we also had to cancel the convocation ceremony due to the pandemic. It was a difficult decision made amidst the lack of information on the disease, but I still feel regret that we were unable to give you the opportunity to meet new friends and teachers on our beautiful campus on the day of the milestone ceremony that marks the beginning of your new academic life.
Although a year late, we are going to hold the convocation ceremony specially for students admitted in the 2020 academic year on Sunday, April 11. I hope this opportunity will give you a real sense of having joined the Doshisha community, as well as new energy to make use of the tough experience of the past year for your leap forward. It is a great pleasure for me to hold this important ceremony for you on our campus and officially see you all in person to honor your efforts of the past year and congratulate you on your joining Doshisha University.

However, in consideration for the safety of you and your family and to prevent the spread of infection, the ceremony will be held in accordance with Kyoto Prefecture’s guidelines “Basic Measures for Preventing Infection During Events,” and attendance will be limited only to students admitted in the 2020 academic year. We will also provide live webcast of the ceremony on our university website for those who cannot attend. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.
Also for prevention of the spread of infection, please do not stay inside the ceremony venue or on campus for a long time after the ceremony, and do not hold or participate in large gatherings or meetings involving food and drink outside the campus. We apologize for having to request this to you on top of all the inconveniences you have endured so far, but we highly expect you to behave in an appropriate manner as Doshisha students.

I am looking forward to seeing you all on our beautiful campus on the day of the ceremony.

UEKI Tomoko
President of Doshisha University
