Report: University of New Orleans (UNO)-Doshisha University Virtual Exchange 2021

Updated May 12, 2021
On 28th April 2021, we held an intercultural virtual event by using Zoom with the University of New Orleans that is a partner university of Doshisha.
The University of New Orleans (hereafter referred to as UNO) is a public research university, which is located in New Orleans—the biggest city of Louisiana State known as one of the most popular tourist attractions in the US. We have been running a short-term programme called ‘UNO-Japan’ with UNO at Imadegawa Campus since 2009. In this programme, the students learn about Japanese history and culture through both on and off campus activities, and interact with Doshisha students. Unfortunately, this year we had to suspend the programme again because the UNO students were unable to come over to Japan due to travel restrictions for the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, this virtual event aimed to maintain international exchange opportunities for students even under these circumstances.
17 UNO students (including some students of Tulane University) and 11 Doshisha students participated in this event. In the first part of the event: the presentation section, three UNO students introduced about the city, culture, and history of New Orleans, and their student life at the university by showing photos and videos taken by themselves. All the presentations were given in fluent Japanese—even one of the presentation was made with Japanese subtitles! Then, our three Doshisha students introduced about overviews of history, culture, must-visit places of Kyoto, and their daily lives at the university from their own points of view by showing slideshows in English. After all the students finished their presentations, the fastest finger first quiz challenges based on their presentations were conducted and the students seemed to get excited about it.
In the latter part: the language exchange section, the students were divided into some small groups, and they mainly talked about themselves such as what they like, what they are interested in each other’s countries, etc. By using both English and Japanese alternatively during their conversation, they helped each other, tried to recollect the vocabularies they had learnt, and enjoyed their language exchange. Although some students seemed to be nervous at the beginning, they could enjoy each other’s company in a short time.
Hoping that COVID-19 will pass soon, so the students can enjoy an exciting and disease-free trip in each other’s countries, and interact with each other in person again.
