Report:"Speed Friending"(presented by SIED)

Updated Dec. 2, 2021
On October 28 (Thu.), SIED hosted an event, "Speed Friending". The name, Speed Friending, means to make friends in a short time, and the event aimed to have fun conversations with new students and get to know each other. In addition to the purpose of international exchanges, the event was held via zoom which allows Doshisha students living outside of Japan due to COVID-19 to join and meet with Japanese students.

Many international students from various countries such as Canada, China, and Argentina came to join our event! At the beginning of the event, participants were divided into groups and self-introduced themselves to each other, and had a little chat in Japanese. Then, a mini quiz competition was held with all the participants. The content was a quiz that guesses the hometown of one members from each group. Giving a famous image of the country as hint seemed to help participants deepen their understanding about each country.

After the mini-quiz, the participants enjoyed chatting about many topics such as autumn events in their home country and their hobbies, etc. with occasional group shuffles.

In the end of this event, some participants exchanged their Instagram accounts with each other and it seems that this event became a good starting point for making new friends in Doshisha as we intended.

On the questionnaire, many international students said that they want more opportunities to speak Japanese, want to join face-to-face events, and interact with Japanese students. We are happy that the participants did enjoy their time, and hope they had wonderful experiences through our event.

We will host various intercultural events both online and face-to-face through the year, so don’t miss it! We hope that our events will make as many students smile as possible; you are welcome to join our events to look for new friends, or come with your new friends.
