Report : "Multilingual Relay Calligraphy"(presented by SIED)

Updated Dec. 2, 2021
SIED hosted "Multilingual Relay Calligraphy Workshop" on November 11th (Thu.) and had 14 participants including international students from various countries. The purpose of this event was to enjoy calligraphy in various languages such as Korean, Chinese, French, etc., deepening their understanding about calligraphy, and interacting with each other. Participants were divided into mixed groups of international students and local students, and the members of each group wrote one character in turn and together they made an awesome artwork. International students from various countries such as China, Korea, Canada, etc. participated in the event and made it very international!

At the beginning of the event, SIED staff introduced the calligraphy culture in Japan and the world, and participants shared their hometown's calligraphy culture to deepen their understanding about calligraphy. After that, they wrote their name on the calligraphy paper with a writing brush and introduced themselves to each other within their group.

Then, we moved on to "Relay Calligraphy". Each group chose some languages they like and wrote characters one by one to complete the famous quote in that language on the large calligraphy paper (about 360W*1360H) called "Hansetsu". While writing, participants enjoyed interacting in various languages by using the "Conversation-card" with simple greetings and self-introductions written in nine languages created in advance by SIED staff. All the artworks were awesome and full of individuality!

We got some feedback from participants say: "It was really exciting!", "I think this event was a good start for me to learn other languages.", "We should meet again soon!"SIED is going to host various intercultural events in the future! We look forward to seeing you in another event!
