Report : "Kite-flying Contest"(presented by SIED)

Updated Jan. 20, 2022
On Tuesday, December 14th, 2021, we held "Kite-flying Contest".
In Japan, one of the most popular year-end traditions is the "Kanji of the Year".

In this event, the participants wrote a "Kanji of the Year" for 2021 that express their own year on a sheet of calligraphy paper with a writing brush, and then they pasted it on a kite and flied a kite into the sky.

Four local students and one international student participated in this event. We saw a wide variety of Kanji (one character) of the year. Some participants wrote Chinese characters or drew a pictures of smiling faces! Apparently, there had been so much that happened in each participant's year. Finally, the kite-making activity was done, we started flying each one at Kamogawa Park!

We were blessed with good weather, and each kite was flying high and stable in the crisp winter sky.

The participants had a great time, and some of the participants even brought their kite home!

In addition to the international exchange, both participants and staff had a good time by looking back on 2021 in choosing "Kanji of the Year" and having a healthy exercise of running to fly a Kite.

We hope all participants had a wonderful experience through our event! SIED will continue hosting many other intercultural events, which you can learn Japanese culture that even Japanese students did not know. We plan to make more fun events in the next semester, If you are interested, please join us!
