The whole world is in an unprecedented moment of anxiety amidst the spread of infection with the Novel Coronavirus (Covid-19). At a time when many people across the world are struggling with the effects of COVID-19, I would firstly like to express my deepest sympathy to those who suffer from the infection, their families and acquaintances. I would also like to extend my sincere gratitude and respect to essential workers in medical services, logistics and other fields who are working hard to keep our society going under these difficult circumstances.

As you all know, in response to the Japanese government’s declaration of state of emergency and the request of Kyoto Prefecture, Doshisha University announced on April 9 restriction of entry into the campuses and closure of university counters until May 11 and that Spring Semester courses would be conducted online (through interactive online classes, video distribution, distribution of teaching materials etc.). In addition, in line with the extension of the state of emergency, we announced on May 7 that the restriction of entry and closure of university counters would be extended until May 31 (see “Doshisha University Action in Response to Novel Coronavirus Infection (No.8 Notice)”).

These measures have been decided and are ongoing in order to fulfill the university’s social responsibility in preventing further spread of infection as well as to protect our students’ life and health, while at the same time continuing to provide education to our students whatever the situation is. Your understanding and cooperation is much appreciated.

We appreciate the feedback you have sent us on various aspects of the online education. In particular, many of you have requested us to unify the distribution format as it is currently confusing with multiple tools being used. The reason that we use a variety of tools including e-class, DUET, Teams, Zoom and university e-mail service is so as to prevent any specific server from overloading and disperse the risk. We apologize for the inconvenience and ask for your understanding and patience. Some students have also pointed out that their study workload is too much, or that their lecturer’s instruction comes at random times and is difficult to understand. Conducting classes remotely online is a new experience for most of our faculty members, and they are working hard day and night to familiarize themselves more with the format. We are in the process of trying and improving the system, and students’ proactive participation and feedback to the faculty will be an enormous help. A university is a community of knowledge that exists on the basis of mutual trust and sincere intellectual communication between faculty and students. Doshisha University is a particularly unique university for its commitment to establishing a community of knowledge based on virtue. At a time like this, more than ever, both faculty and students are expected to trust each other’s conscience and deepen their intellectual exchange.

We are deeply sorry that we are currently unable to offer you the opportunity to study in a normal environment that you expect, where you all meet on our beautiful campus, talk with friends and receive instruction from faculty members face to face. However, we would like to encourage you to keep learning as much as possible by reading books, particularly in an exceptional situation like now. To live in a world of uncertainty and unpredictability like this, we need to come up with new ideas based on past experiences and knowledge of our predecessors, and books are where such knowledge is accumulated.

In addition to the emergency measures that we announced on April 29, which are mainly financial support such as scholarships and expanded eligibility for loans, we have been reviewing what kinds of services can be offered to support your learning under the current circumstances. The materials linked below introduce how to access the various available services for remote learning, including remote access to and book mailing service at the library as well as information on courses and seminars for your career development, which is closely related to your study at the university. I hope you will find them useful.

Individual faculties and graduate schools also offer a range of support services of their own. Please check the website of the faculty or graduate school that you belong to.

Doshisha University is always committed to attending diligently to students’ voices and will continue to respond promptly to the rapidly changing situation.

All academic and administrative staff of Doshisha University are doing our utmost to ensure that students continue their learning, and we humbly ask for the support of you all in our efforts to maintain the university as a community of knowledge. Let us all join hands and overcome this crisis together.
