世界を混乱の渦に巻き込んだ新型コロナウイルスの最初の感染者が確認されてから、二年以上が経過しました。感染症に対しては、さまざまな対応策がとられ、ワクチン接種も行われました。一時は感染者の数が大幅に減りましたが、変異株の出現などにより、予断を許さない状況です。感染された方、そのご家族、関係者の方々にお見舞い申し上げますとともに、困難な状況下において、社会生活を支えて下さっている方々に、心からの敬意と謝意を表します。
また、昨今、痛ましい戦禍によって苦しんでおられる方々が大勢います。暴力からは何も生まれません。本学の創立者・新島襄の言葉「人一人ハ大切ナリ」に込められた、個々人を尊重し、多様性を大事にする思いが世界を包み、平和が訪れることを願っています。
さて、本学は、新型コロナウイルス感染症拡大予防のため、2020年度秋学期以降、対面授業とネット配信授業を併用して授業を行い、対面授業については教室収容定員を大きく制限して実施してきました。困難な中で学びを継続してきた学生の皆さんの不断の努力に改めて敬意を表し、衷心より感謝いたします。
2022年度は、対面授業の教室収容定員を学期末試験時の定員である試験定員に変更しますので、これにより、対面形式で実施する授業科目は2021年度に比べると増加します。基礎疾患等により通学できない学生の皆さんへの配慮は継続しますが、対面授業への対応準備をお願いいたします。
一方で、いまだに予断を許さない状況であることを勘案すると、すべての授業を対面で行うことはできず、一部の科目についてはネット配信授業を実施します。
大学教育は知識を提供することだけがすべてではありません。五感を活用した学び、そして実空間を共有する学生同士の白熱した議論の場を設けること、本学の位置する京都を学びのフィールドとし、地域に貢献するということ、さらには正課との両輪である正課外活動の場を提供することも、大学の重要な役割です。本学は、引き続き感染拡大予防に努めながら、キャンパスで学ぶ機会を積極的に提供いたします。
新島は、幕末動乱のさなか、国禁をおかしてアメリカにわたり、帰国後の1875年、同志社英学校を設立しました。『同志社大学設立の旨意』の中で新島は、ただ普通の英学を教えることだけではなく、「其徳性を涵養し、其品行を高尚ならしめ、其精神を正大ならしめんことを勉め、独り技芸才能ある人物を教育するに止まらず、所謂る良心を手腕に運用するの人物を出さんことを勉めたりき」と述べて、キリスト教主義に基づいた徳育の重要性を強調しています。新島が志した「良心を手腕に運用するの人物」を育てるためには、人と人が空間を共有して深く交流し、さまざまな経験を通して成長できる場を提供しなければならないと強く思っています。
学びにおいて最先端のICTを活用できるよう、2021年度に引き続き、2022年度もさらに情報環境の整備を計画しています。高度なICT活用と並行して、本学の美しいキャンパスに集い、友人と語り合い、教員から直接に指導を受けることにより、人格を磨き、良心の充満した人として生きる――本学の伝統を踏まえた、学びのかたちの新展開を目指します。
新学期、本学キャンパスに学生の皆さんが通ってきてくださることを心待ちにしている一方で、感染拡大に対する心配も打ち消すことはできません。本学では、感染拡大防止策を徹底し、これまで、授業におけるクラスターの発生事例はありませんでした。教職員と、何より学生の皆さんの努力に、改めまして心から感謝いたします。しかし、キャンパス外での、飲食を伴う大人数の会合の場などから、感染者が出ている事例は散見されます。皆さんが学生生活を心から謳歌できず、窮屈な日々を送らなければならないことには胸が痛みますが、一人一人の行動が、大学の対面授業継続、施設利用継続に大きな影響を与えるとともに、ご家族や社会全体にも影響を及ぼす可能性があることを忘れないでください。
感染症への慣れ、自粛疲れなども指摘されるところですが、新学期開始にあたって、気を引き締めていただきたく思います。キャンパスへの入構に際しては、「同志社大学版新型コロナウイルス感染症拡大予防のためのガイドライン」記載の基本事項を遵守してくださるようお願いします。もちろん、感染の可能性は誰にでもあります。感染自体は責められるべきことではありません。もし感染してしまった場合は、「出校可否についてのフローチャート」に沿って、速やかに大学に連絡し、自身の行動については専門家の指示に従ってください。繰り返しのお願いになりますが、感染予防のみならず、感染した場合も含めて、同志社大学生にふさわしく振る舞ってくださることを強く期待いたします。

More than two years have passed since the first detection of COVID-19 that threw the world into turmoil. Although the number of cases significantly dropped for a while thanks to a range of infection prevention measures including vaccination, emergence of new variants and other unexpected factors do not allow optimism. I would first like to express my heartfelt sympathy and prayers to those who have unfortunately been infected, their families and friends, and to extend my deep respect and gratitude to essential workers who dedicate themselves to keep our society safe and running under these difficult circumstances.
It also breaks my heart that many people in the world are suffering in the ravages of war these days. Nothing comes from violence. As in the words of our founder Joseph Hardy Neesima, “each and every person is precious,” it is my sincere wish that peace will be achieved in the world based on the respect for individuality and diversity.
As part of our measures to prevent spread of infection of COVID-19, we have been conducting classes in two formats of face-to-face and online since the Fall 2020 Semester, with the largely reduced classroom capacity for face-to-face classes. Once again, I would like to express my respect to each one of you for your efforts in continuing studies despite the difficult circumstances, and my gratitude for your cooperation and patience.
In the 2022 academic year, we will change the classroom capacity for face-to-face classes to be the same as the capacity for final examinations. As a result, the number of classes that are held face-to-face will increase from that in AY2021. While we continue to offer alternative accommodations for students who cannot commute to campus due to underlying medical conditions or other reasons, we ask the rest of you to make preparations for attending face-to-face classes.
However, in view of the still unpredictable current situation, it is not possible to conduct all classes face-to-face and some courses will be offered online.
University education is not only about provision of knowledge. We consider that provision of opportunities for students to learn through five senses, to engage in heated discussions with fellow students face-to-face, to contribute to the local community with the notion of the entire Kyoto City as a field for learning, and to participate in extracurricular activities that supplement regular courses, is also an important role of a university. We will therefore continue our efforts to keep our campus open to students as much as possible while continuing our infection prevention measures.
Our founder Neesima left for the United States against the overseas travel ban in the middle of the turbulent last days of the Edo Period, and after returning to Japan, he established Doshisha Academy in 1875. In “The Purpose of the Foundation of Doshisha University,” Neesima emphasized the importance of moral education based on Christian principles instead of just teaching the standard Western studies, saying that he aimed to cultivate “people who use their abilities as conscience dictates.” It is my belief that in order to develop “people who use their abilities as conscience dictates,” the university must offer an environment in which students can interact with each other deeply in a shared space and grow as a person through various experiences.
Continuing from AY2021, we plan to further enhance our information environment in AY2022 to make the most advanced ICT available for our students’ learning experience. Based on the tradition of Doshisha, which aims to raise students as individuals filled with conscience, we endeavor to create a new form of learning that gives our students a well-balanced learning experience of both the use of advanced ICT and the direct, in-person instruction from teachers and communication with friends on our beautiful campus.
While we look forward to welcoming you all back on our campus in the new semester, we cannot dismiss our concerns about spread of infection. Thanks to our strict infection prevention measures, no case of cluster infection has occurred in class so far. I would like to express my gratitude to our staff and most of all our students, for your cooperation. However, there have been several cases of infection occurring in large gatherings involving food and drink and other occasions outside the campus. Although it is heartbreaking that you are unable to fully enjoy the university life due to many constraints, we ask you to keep in mind that the actions of each one of you can have a large impact on whether we can continue to make face-to-face classes and university facilities available to you, as well as on your family and society as a whole.
Some of you might have been feeling accustomed to the situation or tired of restrictions, but we ask you to be careful once again before starting the new semester. When you come to the campus, please follow the Basic Matters in the “Doshisha University Guidelines for Preventing Spread of Infection of Novel Coronavirus (Covid-19)”. Of course, anyone can get infected anytime and no one should be blamed just for being infected. If you unfortunately turn out to be infected, please follow the “Flowchart of whether or not you are allowed to come to the campus,” contact the university immediately and follow the instructions of medical experts. Once again, we strongly expect each one of you to act appropriately and responsibly as a Doshisha University student, not only for prevention of infection but also in the event you that you become infected as well.
Our founding spirit of “education of conscience” and commitment to establishing a community of knowledge based on virtue are what makes Doshisha a university like no other, and we must continue to be so. All academic and administrative staff of Doshisha University are doing our utmost to improve the learning environment for our students. Together with our students, we will keep on learning in order to maintain the university as a community of knowledge.

新学期、本学キャンパスに学生の皆さんが通ってきてくださることを心待ちにしている一方で、感染拡大に対する心配も打ち消すことはできません。本学では、感染拡大防止策を徹底し、これまで、授業におけるクラスターの発生事例はありませんでした。教職員と、何より学生の皆さんの努力に、改めまして心から感謝いたします。しかし、キャンパス外での、飲食を伴う大人数の会合の場などから、感染者が出ている事例は散見されます。皆さんが学生生活を心から謳歌できず、窮屈な日々を送らなければならないことには胸が痛みますが、一人一人の行動が、大学の対面授業継続、施設利用継続に大きな影響を与えるとともに、ご家族や社会全体にも影響を及ぼす可能性があることを忘れないでください。
感染症への慣れ、自粛疲れなども指摘されるところですが、新学期開始にあたって、気を引き締めていただきたく思います。キャンパスへの入構に際しては、「同志社大学版新型コロナウイルス感染症拡大予防のためのガイドライン」記載の基本事項を遵守してくださるようお願いします。もちろん、感染の可能性は誰にでもあります。感染自体は責められるべきことではありません。もし感染してしまった場合は、「出校可否についてのフローチャート」に沿って、速やかに大学に連絡し、自身の行動については専門家の指示に従ってください。繰り返しのお願いになりますが、感染予防のみならず、感染した場合も含めて、同志社大学生にふさわしく振る舞ってくださることを強く期待いたします。
本学は良心教育を建学の精神とし、「徳の共同体」を基礎とした「知の共同体」の構築を目指してきた点で唯一無二の大学であり、これからもまたそうあり続けなければなりません。学生の皆さんの学びのために、教職員一同は最大限の努力をしてまいります。大学が知の共同体としてあり続けるために、教職員も学生の皆さんとともに学び続けます。

More than two years have passed since the first detection of COVID-19 that threw the world into turmoil. Although the number of cases significantly dropped for a while thanks to a range of infection prevention measures including vaccination, emergence of new variants and other unexpected factors do not allow optimism. I would first like to express my heartfelt sympathy and prayers to those who have unfortunately been infected, their families and friends, and to extend my deep respect and gratitude to essential workers who dedicate themselves to keep our society safe and running under these difficult circumstances.
It also breaks my heart that many people in the world are suffering in the ravages of war these days. Nothing comes from violence. As in the words of our founder Joseph Hardy Neesima, “each and every person is precious,” it is my sincere wish that peace will be achieved in the world based on the respect for individuality and diversity.
As part of our measures to prevent spread of infection of COVID-19, we have been conducting classes in two formats of face-to-face and online since the Fall 2020 Semester, with the largely reduced classroom capacity for face-to-face classes. Once again, I would like to express my respect to each one of you for your efforts in continuing studies despite the difficult circumstances, and my gratitude for your cooperation and patience.
In the 2022 academic year, we will change the classroom capacity for face-to-face classes to be the same as the capacity for final examinations. As a result, the number of classes that are held face-to-face will increase from that in AY2021. While we continue to offer alternative accommodations for students who cannot commute to campus due to underlying medical conditions or other reasons, we ask the rest of you to make preparations for attending face-to-face classes.
However, in view of the still unpredictable current situation, it is not possible to conduct all classes face-to-face and some courses will be offered online.
University education is not only about provision of knowledge. We consider that provision of opportunities for students to learn through five senses, to engage in heated discussions with fellow students face-to-face, to contribute to the local community with the notion of the entire Kyoto City as a field for learning, and to participate in extracurricular activities that supplement regular courses, is also an important role of a university. We will therefore continue our efforts to keep our campus open to students as much as possible while continuing our infection prevention measures.
Our founder Neesima left for the United States against the overseas travel ban in the middle of the turbulent last days of the Edo Period, and after returning to Japan, he established Doshisha Academy in 1875. In “The Purpose of the Foundation of Doshisha University,” Neesima emphasized the importance of moral education based on Christian principles instead of just teaching the standard Western studies, saying that he aimed to cultivate “people who use their abilities as conscience dictates.” It is my belief that in order to develop “people who use their abilities as conscience dictates,” the university must offer an environment in which students can interact with each other deeply in a shared space and grow as a person through various experiences.
Continuing from AY2021, we plan to further enhance our information environment in AY2022 to make the most advanced ICT available for our students’ learning experience. Based on the tradition of Doshisha, which aims to raise students as individuals filled with conscience, we endeavor to create a new form of learning that gives our students a well-balanced learning experience of both the use of advanced ICT and the direct, in-person instruction from teachers and communication with friends on our beautiful campus.
While we look forward to welcoming you all back on our campus in the new semester, we cannot dismiss our concerns about spread of infection. Thanks to our strict infection prevention measures, no case of cluster infection has occurred in class so far. I would like to express my gratitude to our staff and most of all our students, for your cooperation. However, there have been several cases of infection occurring in large gatherings involving food and drink and other occasions outside the campus. Although it is heartbreaking that you are unable to fully enjoy the university life due to many constraints, we ask you to keep in mind that the actions of each one of you can have a large impact on whether we can continue to make face-to-face classes and university facilities available to you, as well as on your family and society as a whole.
Some of you might have been feeling accustomed to the situation or tired of restrictions, but we ask you to be careful once again before starting the new semester. When you come to the campus, please follow the Basic Matters in the “Doshisha University Guidelines for Preventing Spread of Infection of Novel Coronavirus (Covid-19)”. Of course, anyone can get infected anytime and no one should be blamed just for being infected. If you unfortunately turn out to be infected, please follow the “Flowchart of whether or not you are allowed to come to the campus,” contact the university immediately and follow the instructions of medical experts. Once again, we strongly expect each one of you to act appropriately and responsibly as a Doshisha University student, not only for prevention of infection but also in the event you that you become infected as well.
Our founding spirit of “education of conscience” and commitment to establishing a community of knowledge based on virtue are what makes Doshisha a university like no other, and we must continue to be so. All academic and administrative staff of Doshisha University are doing our utmost to improve the learning environment for our students. Together with our students, we will keep on learning in order to maintain the university as a community of knowledge.
