本日、晴れて学士の学位をお受けになった学部卒業生の皆さん、そして修士、専門職及び博士の学位を授与された大学院修了生の皆さん、まことにおめでとうございます。また、この間、卒業生・修了生を温かく支え、見守ってこられたご家族をはじめ関係者の方々にも、衷心よりお祝い申し上げます。
皆さんの卒業・修了に至るこの三年間は、思いもかけなかった新型コロナウイルス感染症のために、苦難に満ちたものとなってしまいました。
オンライン授業の受講、課外活動の縮小、さまざまな行事の中止、手探りの就職活動など、不自由なこと、困難なことが多々あったと思います。しかし、その苦難を乗り越えて、本日、卒業の日を迎えられました皆さんの、勉学・研究への熱意、研鑽努力に対して深く敬意を表します。そしてまた、皆さんを今日まで支えてくださった多くの方々に思いを馳せ、感謝の心を忘れずにいていただきたいと思います。
さて、皆さんは、アントワーヌ・ド・サン＝テグジュペリの書いた『星の王子さま』をご存知でしょうか。300以上の国と地域で翻訳され、総販売部数は2億冊を超えていると言われます。象を飲み込んだウワバミの絵や、剣を手にし、長い丈の上着にブーツをはいた王子の絵とともに、多くの方が、どこかで目にし、耳にしたことがあるのではないでしょうか。この『星の王子さま』が最初に出版されたのは1943年、今年は、原書が発行されて80年ということで、改めて注目されています。
サハラ砂漠に不時着した飛行士は、ちいさな星からやってきた王子と出会います。王子は一輪のバラの花を大切に世話していましたが、気持ちのすれ違いがあり、その花を残して星を旅立ちました。いろいろな星を経巡って、七番目にたどり着いたのが地球でした。
王子が地球で最初に友だちになったキツネは言います。「いちばんたいせつなことは、目に見えない」「きみのバラをかけがえのないものにしたのは、きみが、バラのために費やした時間だったんだ」「人間たちは、こういう真理を忘れてしまった」「でも、きみは忘れちゃいけない。きみは、なつかせたもの、絆を結んだものには、永遠に責任を持つんだ。きみは、きみのバラに責任がある……」（河野万里子訳・新潮文庫）
王子は、そのバラへの責任を果たすために、黄色い毒蛇に身を噛ませます。明くる朝、王子のからだはどこにもありません。飛行士は、王子が自分の星に帰ったことを確信し、夜空を眺めては、王子とバラの花に思いを馳せるのでした。
この寓意に満ちた物語は、ナチスドイツがパリに無血入城した1940年に渡米した作者が、フランスの団結を呼びかける中で書かれました。王子の星にある、成長が早くて星を破裂させかねない恐ろしい三本のバオバブの木や、掃除を怠ると噴火する火山が、全体主義国家や戦争の比喩になっているという見方もあります。そのような不穏な時代の中でも、目に見えない真理や愛の尊さを静かに語りかける作品です。
星の王子さまの純粋さや誠実さは、コロナ禍により、社会の分断や不寛容、差別の問題が顕在化した今こそ、そして、痛ましい戦禍によって大勢の人々が苦しんでいる今こそ、真に求められるものではないでしょうか。浅はかな幼さとして笑い飛ばされるものではなく、本学の良心教育に通じるような普遍的な価値を持つものではないかと考えます。
皆さんは、本学で過ごした学究の時によって、それぞれの学問領域における知見を深められたことと思います。そしてそれとともに、目に見えない真理を追求し、良心をもって誠実に生きることをも、きっと学ばれたはずです。卒業後、それぞれが赴かれるそれぞれの場所で、どうかその良心に恥じぬ生き方を貫いてくださいますよう、心から願っています。
今年一月、大学に一本のメールが届きました。そのままご紹介いたします。
「本日（１月25日）朝、出勤途中に貴校の京田辺キャンパスの前を通りかかった際に、雪の影響で自家用車がスタックして、道を塞ぐ形で動かなくなりました。それに気づいた男子学生三人が、親切にも「手伝えることはありませんか」と声をかけてくださいました。後ろから押してくれるなどして手伝ってくれたおかげで何とか車を端に寄せることができ、通行の妨げにならずに済みました。最終的には５、６人くらいが来てくれたと思います。授業に遅れそうになりながらも手伝ってくれた貴校の学生には、本当に感謝しています。名前を聞きそびれたのでどなたかはわかりませんが、改めてお礼申し上げます。ありがとうございました。学力だけでなく、人間力の高さも感じられました。」
こうした良心教育を体現するような、すばらしい学生さんたちがいてくださることを本当にうれしく思いますし、心から誇りに思います。ここに集っておられる皆さんも、同じように、高い「人間力」を持って社会に貢献していかれることと確信しています。
もちろん、本日の卒業で皆さんと同志社大学の関係が終わるのではありません。多くの卒業生の、社会の諸分野での活躍が、今日の同志社大学の地位を築きあげてきたように、本日、ここから巣立っていく皆さんの活躍が、本学の評価をさらに揺るぎないものにしていくのです。
社会に出られてからも、ご自身のよりどころを再確認するために、あるいは知識や技能を学びなおすために、どうぞ母校に戻ってきてください。本学はいつでも皆さんを歓迎いたします。
すべての学部卒業生ならびに大学院修了生の皆さんお一人お一人の未来が輝かしい光に満ちたものとなりますようお祈りし、私の式辞といたします。
I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to all of you who just received your bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees respectively on this day of celebration. My heartfelt congratulations also go to your families and acquaintances who have warmly supported and watched over you during your years at the university.
It was very unfortunate that the past three years of your studies at Doshisha turned out to be a difficult period due to the unexpected pandemic of COVID-19.
I am aware that you had to face numerous obstacles and inconveniences throughout these three years, from the online classes and the reduced extracurricular activities to the event cancellations and the unfamiliar way of job seeking. I would like to express my deep respect to you all for your continued passion and efforts in study and research, with which you have overcome these difficulties and are successfully graduating today, and I hope that you will always remain grateful to the people who have supported you in many ways till this day.
Have you read the book The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry? A classic that has been translated in more than 300 countries and regions and is said to have sold more than 200 million copies so far, many of you would have read or heard of the story along with the pictures of a snake swallowing an elephant or the prince wearing a long coat and boots with a sword in his hand. The Little Prince is gaining spotlight once again this year, as it marks the 80th anniversary since its original publication in 1943.
In the book, a pilot crash-lands on the Sahara desert and meets a prince who came from a tiny planet. The prince had left his planet after experiencing difference in feelings with the rose that he was looking after with great care. After traveling around other planets, the Earth was the seventh planet that the prince visited.
The fox who became the prince’s first friend on the Earth says: “The important things in life you cannot see with your eyes...It is the time you gave to your rose that makes her so important to you. People have forgotten this truth. But you must not forget it. You have to be responsible forever for what you have tamed. You are responsible for your rose...”
To fulfill his responsibility for the rose, the prince let a yellow venomous snake bite him. But the prince’s body was nowhere to be found the next morning. Convinced that the prince has gone back to his planet, the pilot thought of him and his rose whenever he looked up at the stars.
This allegorical story was written while the author was calling for the solidarity of France after having moved to the United States in 1940, the year when Nazi Germany occupied Paris unopposed. Some analyze that the three fearsome baobab trees on the prince’s planet that grow so fast it could destroy the planet, and the volcanoes that could erupt if he fails to clean them, are metaphors of a totalitarian state and war. The story quietly tells the importance of invisible truth and love during such dark and turbulent times.
The prince’s pureness and sincerity would be what are truly needed now more than ever, when the problems of social divides, intolerance and discrimination are exposed by the COVID-19 crisis, and when numerous people are suffering from tragic wars. It is not something that can be laughed off as harmless immaturity, but something of universal value that is shared by our education of conscience.
I am certain that while you have deepened your knowledge and insight in your respective academic fields, your years of study at Doshisha University have also taught you the importance of pursuing the invisible truth and living with conscience and integrity. It is my sincere hope that you will always continue to live up to your conscience in your respective places in society after graduation.
An e-mail message came to the university in January. I would like to quote it in full:
“This morning (January 25), when I was driving past the Kyotanabe Campus of your university on my way to work, my car got stuck due to the snow and blocked the road. Then, three male students saw me in trouble and kindly offered to help. Thanks to their help pushing my car from behind, I managed to move it to the side of the road and avoid getting in others’ way. I think five or six students helped me in the end. I am really grateful to those students of your university who helped me despite the risk of getting late for class. I regret forgetting to ask their names, but would like to convey my gratitude to them. I am impressed with how your students seem to be people of high integrity as well as of academic excellence.”
I am very glad and proud that we have such wonderful students who embody the spirit of our education of conscience. I am certain that all of you here will make great contributions to society with similarly high integrity.
Of course, this graduation does not mean the end of your relationship with Doshisha University. Just as the achievements of our alumni in various fields of society over years have established Doshisha University’s reputation today, the future activities of each of you who graduate today will bring further honor to us.
Even after you go out into society, you are always welcome to return to Doshisha University, your alma mater, to reaffirm your roots or to reeducate yourself with additional knowledge and skills.
I would like to conclude my address by expressing my best wishes for a bright future for each and every one of our undergraduate and graduate program graduates.
