Department of Theology

Doshisha School of Theology is one of the largest theological institutions in the world and is widely recognized for its high standard of education. The department offers an innovative educational program where students can learn in depth about three monotheistic religions: Christianity, Judaism and Islam. It also gives students access to the latest IT technologies, preparing them to become active players in a global society.

Department of English

With a proud tradition dating back to the foundation of Doshisha English Academy in 1875, this department aims to produce highly professional graduates with excellent English skills and high academic expertise.

Department of Philosophy

This department encourages students to think profoundly about fundamental and essential facets of human beings, such as the human spirit and mind, and also to help them acquire ‘wisdom’ that can be applied in real-world settings.

Department of Aesthetics and Art Theory

This is one of the few departments in the nation which provides students with an integrated study of aesthetics, art theory and art history. The purpose of the department is to explore the underlying nature and principles of beauty and art.

Department of Cultural History

This department introduces students to the history of diversity and richness of the human spirit that can be seen through the medium of culture. The department consists of two courses: Japanese Cultural History and Western Cultural History. Both courses offer a highly intensive learning environment in small-sized classes, which will help students achieve a high level of academic performance.

Department of Japanese Literature

This department aims to develop students’ international awareness and perspective through the study of Japanese literature and language. To achieve this, the department employs an orthodox empirical method of study, in which information is read through languages written in ancient through contemporary times, while using electronics technology.

Department of Sociology

In this department, students learn diverse perspectives on human relationships through substantial fieldwork, which will empower them to ‘make changes’. The ultimate purpose of this department is to nurture individuals who can offer innovative solutions to the challenging issues facing today’s society.

Department of Social Welfare

This long-established department was among the first in Japan to start social welfare education. Taking advantage of diversified education provided by a comprehensive university, the department aims to create all-round professionals in the field of social welfare.

Department of Media, Journalism and Communications

This department allows students to study the current status of various media industries, including newspapers, broadcasting, publishing and the Internet, and to examine the challenges facing them. The department also teaches students to understand the social roles of the various types of media, as well as how to read information effectively.

Department of Industrial Relations

The role of this department is to encourage students to consider ‘a social structure where people are satisfied with their work’. Students will have many opportunities to engage in hands-on learning experiences with people from the business world as well as government. Class sizes are small to allow for personalized instruction when required.

Department of Education and Culture

This department aims to produce world-class education specialists. To facilitate this, the department has built up a new curriculum based on Doshisha’s ‘internationalism’, with the consideration that language education is a vital tool for the study of education.

Department of Law

The Department of Law has developed a new curriculum focused on providing specialized knowledge directly related to students’ future careers, as well as cultivating students’ legal minds. The department also offers substantial practical preparation courses for national examinations.

Department of Political Science

In this department, students can choose from among three courses, including international relations, contemporary politics, and history and thoughts, tailored to their interests and future career goals. These courses provide astute insight into today’s tumultuous political situations. A series of guest lecturers from the business world are offered to help students explore career options and paths.

While emphasizing the acquisition of basic academic knowledge, this department aims to prepare individuals to become active and contributing members of a global information society by providing, for example, IT education, a varied range of seminars, unique foreign language programs, and credit transfer systems with other universities.

Department of Commerce

The Department of Commerce has employed a flexible curriculum system which allows students to create a personalized program according to their purposes and lifestyles. Both day and night courses are available. The department also offers hands-on learning classes with invited guests from the forefront of international business, including tax accountants and certified public accountants.

Department of Policy Studies

This newly created department has a specific and direct focus on the learning of policy. The curriculum is designed to systematically provide necessary knowledge and skills regarding public policy, with actual policy making at the core. From the first year on, students are intensively trained in small-sized classes to acquire problem-solving abilities.

Faculty of Culture and Information Science

Department of Culture and Information Science

This is a new department which combines the humanities and science, and approaches many kinds of cultural phenomena using the ‘data science’ method. Students learn ways of mathematically analyzing and clarifying culture, language and information. The purpose of this department is to help equip students with the ability to interpret the meanings of culture, as well as a sense of logic.

Department of Intelligent Information Engineering and Sciences

This department aims to train engineers who can create a human and environmentally friendly intelligent information system at the forefront of the evolution of networked, ubiquitous, parallelized, and intellectualized information technology.

Department of Information Systems Design

Through a curriculum that enhances students to systematically learn information science and information engineering from the basics to the advanced level, this department aims to cultivate engineers and researchers who can design and develop information systems embedded in our lives and society.

Department of Electrical Engineering

This department aims to instill in students practical problem-solving abilities, as well as innovative and high-level research and development abilities, through on-site training in a diverse range of experimental subjects.

Department of Electronics

This department deals with a wide range of electrical and electronic engineering, with the central emphasis on information electronics and communication electronics. The department offers special lectures given by invited guests such as leading system development engineers.

Department of Mechanical and Systems Engineering

This department is actively engaged in developing and manufacturing innovative systems responding to environmental issues, such as a resource and energy saving production system.

Department of Mechanical Engineering and Science

This department addresses the challenges of global environmental conservation and effective energy and resource utilization. The primary theme of the department is the development of pollution-free engines and energy-efficient propulsion systems.

Department of Molecular Chemistry and Biochemistry

With a chemistry that concerns highly functional molecules and a biochemistry which concerns life and the body as two key pillars, this department aims to cultivate students’ thinking power and ability of application through an educational program emphasizing laboratory experiments.

Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science

This department offers two courses: The Material Process Design Course, which concerns the development of novel and highly-functional materials including nano-materials, and their process development; and the Environment and Biotechnology Course, which concerns global environmental issues and biological systems.

Department of Environmental Systems Science

In this department, students learn about a diverse range of environmental systems from Earth systems to those concerning the human environment. They will also acquire a broad basic knowledge in science and engineering.

Department of Mathematical Sciences

Mathematical Sciences is an academic discipline with a large potential. For example, mathematical finance can formulate and analyze complex systems in the economy. This department aims to train individuals to acquire high-level knowledge and skills through the collaboration of the three academic areas of mathematics, informational statistics and applied mathematics, and apply what they learn to a variety of fields.

Faculty of Life and Medical Sciences

Department of Biomedical Engineering

This department provides an interdisciplinary field of study of mechanical engineering and medical sciences, where students learn leading-edge ‘engineering technologies for the benefit of human beings’. More specifically, this department undertakes research and development of medical robots that support human motions, medical and welfare apparatus, materials for tissue regeneration, and biocompatible and environmentally-compatible materials.

Department of Biomedical Information

In this department, students learn an interdisciplinary field of information and electronics engineering, and medical sciences. The study and research focus on clarifying the information process mechanism within a human brain, the measurement of biological information using technologies of electronics engineering, and the development of various kinds of medical devices.

Department of Medical Life Systems

This department encompasses a broad area of medicine, ranging from molecular biology and cellular biology to anatomy, pharmacology and internal medicine. Research and technological development are conducted in order to acquire a deep understanding of human structure and function, and the causes of diseases, and also to contribute to medical care including health promotion, and the prevention and treatment of disease.

Department of Health and Sports Science

In response to the growing concern and importance of health and sports science, this department aims to nurture individuals who are equipped with expertise and up-to-date sports science theories and who are able to make a positive contribution to the social development of health enhancement and sports. Students can choose from among three courses: Health Science, Training Science and Sports Management.

Department of Psychology

This department aims to provide a scientific elucidation of ‘mind’ and ‘behavior’. Students can learn about psychology in a comprehensive manner through laboratory experiments, clinical experiments and a series of lectures covering a wide range of subjects.

Department of Global Communications

This department aims to produce individuals who can solve problems that may arise in multicultural situations, and effectively perform as facilitators, negotiators and administrators in various circumstances in our ever-changing international society where businesses, cultures and education all combine and interact.

Faculty of Global and Regional Studies

The Europe Course

This course provides specialized knowledge about a chosen country from among Germany, France, Russia and the UK, as well as global themes such as religion, immigration and colonialism.

The Asia-Pacific Course

In addition to providing knowledge of the histories of specific areas within the Asia-Pacific region, this course shares the latest information and perspectives on challenges born of globalization, such as culture clashes, historical understanding and gender issues.

The Americas Course

This course not only provides fundamental knowledge about North and Latin America, including their surrounding islands, but also examines the diversity of the American continent and its relationship with other regions around the world through lectures on various topics.
