Center for General and Liberal Education
Creating rich and varied courses in a wide range of academic fields

The Center for General and Liberal Education creates broad-based subjects for general education, which are common to all students across all faculties, to stimulate students’ intellectual curiosity in diverse academic fields. The center constantly examines the courses and makes innovative changes to the content of each subject in collaboration with all teachers and staff. Liberal arts education at Doshisha University is materializing the founding spirit of ‘conscience education’ based on the three elements of its educational philosophy: Christianity, Liberalism (Spirit of autonomy and independence) and Internationalism, while maintaining the tradition of liberal arts education since the foundation of Doshisha English Academy 140 years ago. In addition to the subjects based on the framework of traditional liberal arts education, the center offers a new model of liberal arts education that includes ‘Doshisha subjects’ in which students learn about the founding spirit of Doshisha, as well as Christianity; career subjects designed to materialize the spirit of autonomy and independence; and project subjects which focus on project-based learning in which students work in teams and learn through real-world problem solving. In times of accelerated change, the Center for General and Liberal Education will endeavor to prepare students to be global citizens equipped with a well-rounded educational background and keen international awareness who will contribute to realizing a healthy and peaceful society.
