From March 3 (Thursday) to August 6 (Sunday), 2022, German Language and Intercultural Studies EU Campus Program 2022 was held at Doshisha EU Campus at Tübingen University for the first time in three years despite the COVID-19 pandemic. Fourteen students from the Faculty of Letters, the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Commerce, the Faculty of Global and Regional Studies, and the Graduate School of Letters participated in the program. Four of them were students participating in the program in 2020, who had to return to Japan three weeks after the start of the program due to the rapid spread of the COVID-19 infection.

In German classes, taught by faculty members from the University of Tübingen, the students also took part in field trips, visited elementary schools, and other off-campus practical trainings. From April, they studied German language by proficiency level together with international students from various countries and regions, and worked hard to improve their language skills. In addition to German language classes, the students deepened their understanding of German and EU society and culture through Joint Seminar: Intercultural Studies classes with students from Department of Japanologie at the University of Tübingen and special lectures by Doshisha faculty members on EU Campus.

In extracurricular activities, the Buddy Program, in which Doshisha students and UT Japanologie students are paired up, was also implemented in 2022. While learning each other’s language, the students sometimes went beyond the framework of a "Buddy Program" and deepened exchanges on and off campus, either individually or in groups. The past five months they spent together, feeling the joy of face-to-face communication, must have been precious and unforgettable memories for the students of both universities.

Although there were many difficulties in implementing this program face-to-face during the COVID-19 Pandemic, we were able to successfully complete the program thanks to the continued and sincere supports of all involved at the University of Tübingen. We would like to take this opportunity again to thank everyone involved in this wonderful program.

The "Student Voice" written by the participating students during the program is available on the EU Campus website in both Japanese and German. Please refer to the following link.
