The 4th International Interdisciplinary Symposium was held at the historical and solemn building, "Alte Aula" of the University of Tübingen (hereinafter referred to as UT) on September 12 (Mon.) and 13 (Tue.), 2022. This was co-organized by UT and Doshisha University (hereinafter referred to as DU) and Doshisha EU Campus at Tübingen University. It was indeed the first time in three years that the Symposium was held in person (partially with a hybrid online session).

The main theme of the Symposium was "Challenges Toward ‘True’ Sustainable Development". Panelists from both universities presented their research results on how to facilitate sustainability from three perspectives; (1) Challenges for Climate Change, (2) Agriculture, Forestry and Nature Conservation:Challenges for Biodiversity Conservation, and (3) Reducing Economic Disparity.

In addition to faculty and staff members from UT, many undergraduate, graduate students and post-doctoral researchers from UT also participated in the Symposium and we had lively discussions with them.

After the first day of the Symposium, participants from DU had an opportunity to visit the Geo and Environmental Center (GUZ) at UT, where Prof. Dr. Kira Rehfeld, Director of the Center as well as one of the panelists, kindly spare some time for them to give a tour of the world's most advanced research facilities.

Discussions on the second day were also heated up, and the Symposium ended with great success. After the Symposium, there was an opportunity for individual exchanges between researchers. We very much look forward to further research exchanges between the two universities in the future.
