Watching the Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament
On July 20, at the invitation of Mr. Toyohara, Senior Advisor to the Doshisha Sports Union, I attended the Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament to cheer on our alumnus, Sumo Wrestler Toshinofuji (who graduated from the School of Theology in 2023).
Toshinofuji, a former member of the university’s Sumo Club, is a promising wrestler who was promoted to the Juryo division in March 2026.
In his bout on July 20, he entered the ring wearing a “Doshisha University” ceremonial belt, primarily created by members of the Sumo Club Alumni Association.
He secured a splendid victory over Tokihayate with a “yorikiri” throw.
Mr. Ito, President of the Sumo Club Alumni Association, also came to cheer him on and provided commentary from the seat next to mine.
It brings us great joy to see a Doshisha University graduate performing so well.
We wish Toshinofuji continued success in the future.
