A Picture of Andover Theological Seminary from the Era When Joseph Hardy Neesima Studied There
Mr. Thomas Rockerby and Ms. Ellen Sullivan of Phillips Academy Andover, who recently visited our university and met with Vice President Kihara, presented us with a picture of Andover Theological Seminary from the time when Joseph Hardy Neesima was a student there. Although Andover Theological Seminary has since relocated, it was attached to Phillips Academy during Neesima’s time there.
After arriving in the United States, Neesima studied at Phillips Academy, and before returning to Japan, he studied at Andover Theological Seminary; therefore, the scenery depicted in the painting would have been one of the most familiar sights to him.
This is a precious picture that allows us to reflect on the young Neesima as he deepened his studies in the United States.
