Attended the 100th Anniversary Commemoration Ceremony of the Jutokukai, Doshisha University Faculty of Commerce
On September 27, I attended the 100th-anniversary commemoration ceremony of the Jutokukai, Doshisha University Faculty of Commerce, held at the Hotel Okura Kyoto.
The Jutokukai is an alumni association for graduates of the Faculty of Commerce and the Graduate School of Commerce at Doshisha University.
At the ceremony, Professor Tomohiro Seki of the Faculty of Commerce delivered a commemorative lecture titled “Learning from 100-Year-Old Companies: The Next 100 Years.”
This was followed by a panel discussion featuring Mr. Taro Mishima, President and CEO of Mishimatei Co., Ltd.; Mr. Akira Kamei, President and CEO of Erizen Co., Ltd.; and Mr. Yuji Fujimura, Executive Director of the 100-Year Management Research Institute, a general incorporated association.
Afterward, in my congratulatory address, I noted that the Jutokukai’s 100-year history and Doshisha’s 150-year history have been made possible only through the hard work of our predecessors, including during difficult times. I also noted that the points Professor Seki raised in his commemorative lecture—the need to ask “why long-established companies are striving to continue,” the distinction between “what must not be changed” and “what must be changed,” and the transmission of timeless values—apply not only to businesses but also to educational institutions, including Doshisha University. I explained that we are undertaking these initiatives under a new vision.
A total of 491 people from across the country attended today’s commemoration. It was a wonderful event that provided an opportunity to interact with many people and celebrate the 100th anniversary together.
