Report: “Let's make your own fan!” (presented by SIED)

Updated Jul. 4, 2022
On Sunday, June 26th, SIED held an event "Let's make your own fan!" at Maisendo, a Japanese fan store in Gion-Shijo. A total of 8 students, 5 international students and 3 local students participated. The purpose of this event was to learn about the history of folding fans, to make your own fan by painting it, and to promote international exchange through these activities.

First, we gathered at Gion-Shijo Station, where participants introduced themselves to each other. Since the main purpose of this event was to paint fans, we were worried about whether the participants would have the time to interact with each other, but they seemed to be having a lot of fun interacting while waiting for the event to start as well as when walking to Maisendo, and these turned out to be good opportunities for the participants to get to know each other.

While everyone was concentrating on painting fans for most of the event, there were times when participants taught each other different painting techniques, and while waiting for the store clerk to finish up the fan, everyone had a great time talking to each other.

After arriving at Maisendo, the store clerk told us about the history of folding fans, and also prepared some manga describing the history of folding fans, so that even those who are not great at Japanese could understand. After that, we painted the fans. The participants colored the fans based on templates that had been prepared. Some participants had prepared their own designs in advance, and it seems like everybody was satisfied with their own fan.

SIED will continue to hold events where everyone can enjoy international exchange while making sure appropriate infection prevention measures are taken, so we look forward to seeing you at these events.
