Carleton College Off-Campus Study – Imadegawa Campus

Updated Jun. 26, 2023
Over nearly 2 months period from March 27th to June 6th, Carleton College Off-Campus Seminar 2023 was held on Imadegawa Campus. Carleton College is a private liberal arts college located in Minnesota, USA, and is well known for its academic excellence and warm, welcoming campus community. More than five decades of exchange between Doshisha University and Carleton College began in 1953. In the early 1960s, a women’s dormitory “Carleton House” for the representatives of Carleton College and Doshisha female students was established. After 1972, as Carleton College joined AKP (Associated Kyoto Program), the bond between both sides became even stronger.

Due to Covid-19, the program was not held from 2020 to 2022, but this year we were able to implement the program for the first time in four years. This year we had 17 Carleton College students who studied under the theme of “Linguistics and Culture” using Doshisha facilities. This program took importance on field trips and exploring cities besides the classes such as Hiroshima: the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and Miyajima for deeper understanding of Japanese history, and Tokyo. Students were required to widen their field of activities and experience the life in Japan. Not only in the academic aspects, they also enjoyed the student’s daily life by visiting places such as Izakaya (Japanese pub), ramen restaurants, okonomiyaki, karaoke, and local shopping.

We also had students called “Doshisha Peers,” who interacted with each other by hanging out and eating lunch together, also helped Carleton students to get used to new places and their life in Kyoto. They made good friendship during the program.

The program had welcome and farewell parties at the dining hall of Amherst Guest House. At the welcome party, Carleton College students beautifully sang Doshisha College Song and Carleton College Song for Doshisha Peers. At the farewell party, a video of memories of their stay in Japan, edited by Carlton students, was shown, bringing the program to an emotional conclusion.

Students seemed to enjoy the transition of seasons from spring with blooming cherry blossoms and to fresh leaves in early summer deepen their tender green. We hope that they spent fulfilling days with acquiring new knowledge, experiences, and friends in Japan.

We hope to build better programs year by year and wish more international students will get to know Japan and Japanese culture through learning at Doshisha campus.
